Years & Years has shared a snippet of the new single ‘Starstruck’ on his TikTok, starting a new challenge with the hashtag #Starstruck, encouraging fans to share their post-lockdown glow up. The song is due to be released on 8th April and is the first track to be released from Years & Years as Olly Alexander’s solo project since the departure of Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Türkmen.
Alexander’s TikTok features the singer lounging on a sofa wearing pyjamas with the text “lockdown day 1″, with the days increasingly getting longer all the way up to day 1508, before having clothes thrown at him where he dances into the camera and does other mundane activities such as taking selfies with the text “working on my post-lockdown glow up”. The video is accompanied by the exclusive snippet of ‘Starstruck’. The caption of the video reads: “show off ur finest post-lockdown glow-up to leave everyone #Starstruck”, encouraging fans to use his audio in their videos.
The singer took it to Instagram to announce his new TikTok video featuring his new single, saying: “Starstruck is now on TikTok! So head over there right now to get a first listen and to make your own videos with it. The ‘Starstruck challenge’ is all about showing your finest post-lockdown glow up, that is leaving everyone starstruck. So go and have a listen, make your own video, I can’t wait to see what you come up with.”
Years & Years was originally formed in 2010 as a trio with members Olly Alexander, Mikey Goldsworthy, and Emre Türkmen. Since then, they have released two albums, ‘Communion’ in 2015 and ‘Palo Santo’ in 2018. On 18th March this year, Goldsworthy and Türkmen have announced that they will no longer be active members but they remain close with Alexander. On Instagram, they wrote: “This upcoming new album has been an Olly endeavour and we’ve decided that Years & Years will continue as an Olly solo project. The three of us are still good friends. Mikey will be part of the Y&Y family and play with us live and Emre will focus on being a writer/producer. These past twelve months have been crazy for us all and we want to thank you for the love and support you’ve given us over the years (& years).”
Olly Alexander has also had a successful acting career, featuring in various shows such as ‘Skins’, ‘God Help the Girl’ and most recently ‘It’s A Sin’, in which his performance has been met with critical acclaim.
