North London indie outfit Wolf Alice have confirmed they will return to the live stage in 2022, with a thirteen-date UK and Ireland tour scheduled for next January. Tickets for the tour – which kicks off with a show at Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom on Friday 7th January – go on general sale next Friday (26th March).
In a series of posts announcing the tour on the band’s official Twitter account, frontwoman Ellie Rowsell said “We’ve finally got a tour to announce and it feels soo gooood (promoters get the hummous ready) we are coming home…I can not wait to see you all again old fans and new even the friend you’ve dragged along who doesn’t even want to be there, I can’t wait to see you too. The new songs Rowsell refers to will come from Wolf Alice’s third studio album Blue Weekend, which will be released via the Dirty Hit label on Friday 11th June. The eleven track LP will arrive four years after the group’s last record, the Mercury Prize-winning Visions Of A Life. Like their BPI gold-certified 2015 debut My Love Is Cool, Visions Of A Life reached number #2 in the Official UK Albums Chart and spawned a succession of well-received singles including the catchy synth-pop number Don’t Delete the Kisses.
Last month the Londoners’ unveiled the lead single from Blue Weekend in the form of the sweeping, atmospheric epic The Last Man on Earth. The anthemic new track – which Rowsell has said is about “the arrogance of humans” – has already received a series of glowing reviews, including a five-star write-up in NME. Scribe Rhian Daly called the song a “majestic change of pace“, adding that “If ‘The Last Man On Earth’ is even just a hint at the greatness to come on their third album, ‘Blue Weekend’ should propel them to the level of major festival headliners and arena conquerors with ease.”
The group will also have been thrilled with the positive feedback the new single received from Nicky Wire of the Manic Street Preachers, the iconic band who gave them an early break as touring understudies back in 2014. Manics wordsmith and bassist Wire tweeted his emphatic approval of The Last Man on Earth, writing: “Love this song-love the tune-love the words-love the band.”
Wolf Alice gave their comeback single its TV debut earlier this month with a stripped-back set on Later… with Jools Holland recorded at Alexandra Palace in London. The performance featured a typically emotive, piano-led rendition from Rowsell; accompanied ably by a stirring string section.
