The Bristolian rapper and visual artist Willow Kayne has dropped a new video for her jungle-pop infused pop banger “Final Notice”, which aims a nod at the vibrant culture of her hometown and a particular 1999 British cult classic movie. The ethos for the new track was described here as; “a love letter to the junglist stylings of her hometown of Bristol”.
The video follows Kayne and her posse of fellow shoppers throwing an impromptu rave in a local record shop. It’s fair to say that the video’s stylistic choices mirror the legendary Danny Dyer flick Human Traffic. Complete with body bobbing and extreme close-ups to round off the homage to the landmark film. The song itself is a proclamation of Kayne’s need for a sense of autonomy and identity, with lines like “Won’t be a clone of your other products. Please don’t tell me what to do” and “I had a meeting last week and they told me I should smile more, and I said ‘did you forget that it’s me that you work for?” Take a look at the new track down below:
Earlier in 2022, Kayne released her debut EP Playground Antics to great acclaim. The premier effort of this budding new talent was described here as; “Joyous and cheeky as its name suggests, paying tribute to her Bristol origins by hopping and bouncing through a mix of genres such as hip-hop, pop, punk, and jungle – the latter’s subtle but commanding fingerprints are all over these tracks.”
In regards to her first EP, Kayne opened up about what the music meant to her and what lies in store for the future, saying; “Me hitting back at all the people who told me I couldn’t do it. The new project is very orange. It’s different, but it’s me and I’ve never felt this ‘me’ in my life. I’m feeling really, really confident about it.”
Further down the line, Willow Kayne will appear with Gorillaz for their All Points East Headline Show. Other names expected to show at the London Festival include; Yves Tumor, IDLES, Self Esteem, Obonjayar, NewDad, Femi Kuti, Remi Wolf, Turnstile, Gabriels, Ibeyi and Nia Archives.
