William Doyle released his latest single ‘Nothing At All’ from his forthcoming album ‘Great Spans Of Muddy Time’ which is set to release on the 19th of March. Doyle’s 2021 record will be released following on from his 2019 album ‘Your Wilderness Revisited’. Doyle’s release of ‘Nothing At All’, comes after the release of the album’s lead single ‘And Everything Changed (But I Feel Alright)’ which hit all the streaming platforms last month on the 13th of January.
On his instagram page, Doyle described ‘Nothing At All’ as a “simple melancholic synth pop gem”. The artist further said that the song had a last dance at a school disco kind of feel to it. Doyle wrote, “There’s a melodrama to it. It explores the chasm that exists between forming a thought and being able to express it clearly. I hope you enjoy it. I hope you enjoy it even more in context when ‘Great Spans of Muddy Time’ is released on 19th March 2021″
“I was aware that time was limited
And that I’d have to keep it brief
But then the words came out in all the wrong orders
The rest were jammed behind my teeth”
Doyle sings in the very first verse of ‘Nothing At All’ . Listen to the song down below:
Speaking to NME, Doyle described his upcoming album ‘Great Spans Of Muddy Time’ as a “kind of Englishman-gone-mad, scrambling around the verdancy of the country’s pastures looking for some sense”. The artist added further that his album “has its seeds in Robert Wyatt, Brian Eno, Robyn Hitchcock, and Syd Barrett.”
Doyle revealed in the interview that the inspiration for his album title came from his love for Monty Don, he said, “I became obsessed with Monty Don. I like his manner and there’s something about him I relate to. He once described periods of depression in his life as consisting of ‘nothing but great spans of muddy time’. When I read that quote I knew it would be the title of this record.
