In recent years Beyoncé has taken to surprising fans by releasing new material with no promo whatsoever, then gaining even more publicity in the process – and the singer’s latest single is no exception to the rule. Formation is the first new release from Beyoncé since 2014’s extended platinum edition of surprise self titled album Beyoncé, and the provocative music video also sees the appearance of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s infant daughter Blue Ivy.
This comes on the eve of Beyoncé’s performance at the 2016 Super Bowl half time show, with the timing hardly likely to be coincidental – it has been suggested that this was a deliberate move on Beyoncé’s part to utilise her appearance at the Super Bowl in order to promote the new single. The element of surprise certainly seems to be working, with the video gaining copious media attention in the few hours since its release.
