Singer-songwriter Mackenzie Scott has been preparing for three of the most exciting dates in her already short career. Scott performs under the name Torres, and as you hear her lyrics come pouring out of her mouth you feel yourself getting closer and closer to the music, finding emotions you didn’t even know you had.
That just describes the intensity that Scott puts into her lyrics. Coming straight from the heart, she tells stories of love and life and how they could always unexpectedly change in a heartbeat, hitting you harder than you could have expected. With the soft, intricate guitar strings plucked away in the background, they act as the perfect company to her soothing voice, and you will feel yourself float away into the sky as the songs serenade their way into your mind.
It is a sound that won’t be unrecognisable to UK residents. Think Florence and the Machines’ wide vocal range, mixed with the delicacy of Laura Marling’s touching lyrics added with a dose of innovative guitar performances and you begin to get the idea of what Torres is all about. The dark pop movement has only been in the limelight for a couple of years now, but with artists like Scott showcasing an incredibly display of passion and heart, it won’t be long before it becomes a widespread movement.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Torres is that Scott didn’t even pick up an electric guitar until Christmas last year. She had already been comfortable with acoustic guitars, but didn’t think the sound was quite right. That was until she plugged in that Gibson 335 and found her signature straight away.
Torres is performing three dates in her trip to the UK this week. If you are in the London or Manchester area or are going to Latitude Festival this coming weekend, you can make worse decisions then to take in some of the most heart warming songs you’re likely to hear all year. She will be playing The Lexington in London on Tuesday the 16th, The Castle on Oldham Street in Manchester on the Wednesday and on the i Arena stage at Latitude Festival on the Saturday. You will not want to miss it.
