This comes after the release of their fourth studio album ‘Underworld’ on the 12th of January 2018. The band consisting, of lead vocalist Jenna McDougall, guitarist Whakaio Taahi guitarist Jake Hardy, bassist Cameron Adler, and drummer Matt Best. ‘Underworld is the last album to feature founding member and guitarist Whakaio Taahi, who departed the band upon the record’s completion.
In a statement released on Facebook, the band, said: “It is with regret and great sadness that we announce our guitarist Whakaio’s departure from Tonight Alive. After 9 years on this path together, Whak has made the decision to step back from touring and pursue his own career in song-writing and producing outside of the band. Whakaio loved and came alive in the creative process; it was a pleasure and privilege to witness. We know his heart and gifts belong in the studio and we continue to love and support each other as a family. The four of us consider ourselves to be 1 part of a greater whole, and will always hold a place for our brother and best friend, whose energy will be known, heard and felt for lifetimes.”
The album was recorded in Thailand by producer Dave Petrovic, who produced the band’s 2013 album ‘The other Side’. It features contributions from Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor, as well as PVRIS vocalist Lyndsey “Lynn Gunn” Gunnulfsen.
“Every time we write a song, I’m very mindful that I’m not saying there’s no hope or that we’re doomed; I really don’t appreciate that type of music or message. If people truly believe that and they put it out there then that’s one thing, but I’m coming from a self-help standpoint and have been for a long time and I really care about personal development and evolution of the mind and spirit and that’s part of why I always have a silver lining in our songs,” says McDougall.
The album’s first single, ‘Temple’, was released in October 2017, it was followed by two further singles – ‘Crack My Heart’ in December 2017, and ‘Disappear’ in January 2018. Speaking about the song ‘Temple’, McDougall, said: “In the first line of the song I say ‘I’m intoxicated by my depression,’ and for the first time I was actually like ‘I am depressed, I am so deeply unhappy and I feel so completely trapped in my life right now.’ And just admitting that was one layer off the entrapment for me.”
