Andrea Begley, winner of the second series of ‘The Voice UK’, has released a new music video for her cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Dancing in the Dark’, from her forthcoming debut album, ‘The Message’.
The civil servant from Pomeroy, Northern Ireland – who is partially sighted – won the talent competition in June in a surprise victory over bookies favourite, fellow Irishwoman Leah McFall. Her first single, a cover of Evanescence’s ‘My Immortal’, charted at no.30 in the UK singles chart.
What the Boss himself and his legions of fans will make of the cover is debatable – Begleys understandably static stage prescence and emerald-isle reedy vocals are a far cry from the rockers gruff Jersey twang and bouncy, energetic performance style, and in all honesty, an argument could be made that a classic like this shouldn’t be covered, much less rearranged in a fairly listless manner. The video, best described as ‘Coldplay’s Yellow meets a Tampax advert’ doesn’t help matters. Nonetheless, she undeniably has a decent voice, and would do better if pointed towards the indie-folk songs she suits.
Begley will celebrate her albums release with two live shows – one at Ulster Hall in Belfast on November 3rd, and the second in Islington, London on November 4th. The album is said to contain self-written songs as well as covers, and will hopefully perform better than her predecessors – Series 1 victor Leanne Mitchell, whose self-titled debut reached only no.134 in the UK albums chart, selling less than 900 copies on release.
‘The Message’ is due for release on October 21st.
