The UK has started its festive music binge early this year. Spotify has announced that countries around the world, particularly the UK, have been streaming, downloading, and purchasing Christmas songs particularly early this year. Despite this being a surprise (even though given this year it’s not a surprise) Christmas music has been making its comeback earlier each year!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!…or at least it is in early November. Spotify and iTunes have released figures that show how much earlier this year that Christmas music than in previous years. Of course, the song that crept in early in is the festive top tier staple none other than Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas. Spotify and iTunes show that the festive it has reappeared in the charts on the 8th and 2nd of November respectfully a whole 2 weeks earlier than the year before.
Being within the top 50 on both streaming giants All I Want For Christmas isn’t the only festive wonder that is making it’s early come back. “Behind her in the Spotify chart are six more Christmas songs, including The Pogues’ Fairytale of New York and Michael Bublé’s It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas. Between them, the songs have more than 500,00 daily plays.”
As it stands now Carey’s Christmas hit is currently 63rd but it is expected to enter the UK charts any day now. If so then this year would mark All I Want For Christmas‘s 100th overall week in the top charts. Considering it was released in 1994 having 100 weeks (obviously not straight) in the top charts is one hell of a feat for anyone.
Although the UK has been starting its festive cheer early we are lagging behind other countries. Estonia and Iceland started to dust off the ol’ Christmas playlists in October, but out shadowing even them is the Philipines who were getting into their Christmas spirit all the way back in early September! As someone who loves Christmas even, I think that’s too early.
Speaking of too early, Magic Radio has launched its new radio station which is dedicated 100% to Christmas music. However, many people would think that this would be a seasonal station that would start around about now, but due to popular demand, they launched the station WAY back in August! We’ve been able to get into the festive mood back since way back in the summer (2 seasons before the festive season).
The news on Christmas music being listened to early is obvious. This year the world has been plagued with the Coronavirus pandemic and we’ve all suffered and worried, earlier in the year people kept their Christmas decorations up or put them up early to keep the spirits of the community up. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why Christmas music is coming out early. We could all do with some festive cheer around now, let’s keep safe and get into the Christmas mood with some Miriah Carey!
