Nevada indie-rock kings The Killers are set to release their first greatest hits compilation, entitled, ‘Direct Hits’, on November 11th through Island Records.
The quartet, formed in Las Vegas in 2001, have established themselves over the last decade as one of indie-rocks most financially and critically successful acts. Their debut, ‘Hot Fuss’, released in 2004, stands as a landmark record of its genre, selling approximately 7 million copies worldwide. It’s follow-up, 2006’s ‘Sam’s Town’ did not quite match up to the overwhelming success of its predecessor, but still sold a respectable 4 million copies, and in time was recognised by Rolling Stone as one of the most underrated albums of the decade. A 2007 compilation of B-Sides, ‘Sawdust’, and two further studio albums, 2008’s, ‘Day and Age’ and 2012’s ‘Battle Born’ continued to sell into the millions, each accompanied by a hugely successful world tour.
While promoting, ‘Battle Born’, the band began to work on new material, whilst remaining elusive about the format it would take. ‘Direct Hits’ was announced yesterday, the ten year anniversary of their first UK show, which took place at London’s Dublin Castle.
The track listing contains most of the bands hit singles, including UK Top Ten Hits, ‘Mr. Brightside’, ‘Somebody Told Me’, ‘When You Were Young’ and ‘Human’. Twelve of the bands 22 singles have been included in total, with some omissions including, ‘Bones’ and ‘Here With Me’. Only one non-single album track – ‘The Way It Was’ from ‘Battle Born’ has been included. In addition, two new songs, entitled, ‘Shot At The Night’ and ‘Just Another Girl’ have been recorded for the album.
A deluxe edition will include a Calvin Harris remix of, ‘When You Were Young’, and an unreleased demo of, ‘Mr. Brightside’.
Speaking to NME, frontman Brandon Flowers – who also has a successful solo career – stated of the decision to release the compilation after over a decade that; “This record feels like a great way to clean everything up and move onto the next thing.”
