The Darkness have dropped their latest single “Jussy’s Girl” taken from their upcoming album Motorheart.
The British rockers’ new track follows the group’s successful rock formula with electric guitar licks, soaring vocals and steady percussion. The track’s title appears to be a play on the popular hit “Jessy’s Girl” by Rick Springfield. The chorus pays homage to a 1981 single with familiar guitar hooks and melodies, although the track is not a direct cover the single incorporates musical similarities and nuances.
The new single’s press release describes the track and further confirms the 80’s sonic inspiration, “‘Jussy’s Girl’ is sensitive as a falling boulder. It oozes rock n roll extravagance with huge 80s influenced riffs and an anthemic chorus that summons the inescapable carnal powers of love.”
A flamboyant new music video accompanied the single release and also involves the theme of history, the video sees frontman Justin Hawkins time travel with a time machine telephone box. Hawkins first enters the phone box after a broken-down motorcycle and soon the singer is transported back in time. The singer’s journey encompasses the black and white splendour and characters seen in silent movies of the past.
The band took to their Instagram to share behind the scenes photos from their video.
Hawkins has given the following statement within the press release concerning the new single, the singer describes the song’s meaning and its musical influences. “Jussy’s Girl is a song about unrequited desires of both the flesh and the heart. Although one could argue that hearts are made out of the same stuff as flesh. You know what I mean though. It’s about an unspeakable longing, but sounds like a bloke walking around in his 501s on a sunny day. It’s sad, but also carefree. Sonically we were aiming for somewhere between Def Leppard and Billy Ocean. Well, I was. There’s a helicopter in it and an awesome guitar solo. What more could you ask for?”
“Jussys Girl” is the third single to be taken from the group’s forthcoming album Motorheart, set to be released on 19th November 2021 via independent record label Cooking Vinyl. The group’s seventh studio album has released two prior singles, “Nobody Can See Me Cry” and the album’s title track “Motorheart” a love song in celebration of a sex robot’s devotion. The quartet’s new material follows the band’s 2019 album Easter is Cancelled; the album sired three singles including “Rock And Roll Deserves to Die”. The album was met with commercial success reaching number 10 within the UK album charts, making the release their fourth top 10 albums.
The new album will be available in multiple formats and configurations both in standard and deluxe editions. For fans of Vinyl, heavyweight black vinyl, as well as limited edition colour LPs, are available to pre-order. Other physical formats include CDS and an old-school cassette along with exclusive and signed material.
