Originally released in 1992, the album reached Number One on the UK charts and Number Two on the US Billboard 200. The record contains the singles “High”, “A letter To Elise”, and one of their most famous songs, “Friday I’m In Love”, which reached number six on the UK charts. The song also won the gong for European Viewer’s Choice for Best Music Video at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.
On July 29th, the band announced on their Twitter page that the special deluxe reissue of Wish will be available to buy on October 7 via UMC/Fiction/Polydor, the 2LP version following on November 25. You can pre-order the special edition here.
In a press release for the reissue of Wish, the band revealed that the album was born out of demo sessions at The Live House in Cornwall and at Farmyard Studios in the Cotswold. Smith said in a statement of the time, “We got around 40 songs put down during those two sessions. We were on fire!”
On revisiting the album in 2022, he said, “There’s a side to the album which I had kind of forgotten, a very gentle, yearning thing which is quite beautiful.” Smith went on, “‘Trust’ is one of the best things we’ve ever done I think, it’s played with great feeling, and ‘To Wish Impossible Things’ is another gorgeous, melancholic piece… in fact it could well be my favourite song on the record.”
A small mistake on the album, which has annoyed Smith for 30 years, was another reason for the band to revisit their hit, he revealed, “It was too late to do anything about it; the album was out, and we were off around the world again. It has really bugged for me for a very long time. It has taken 30 years, but finally, finally my Wish has come true.”
The band will also release a 3CD edition with an extra four songs that originally appeared on Lost Wishes, a 1993 mail-order special edition cassette and never available anywhere else.
