Night Network will be the Jarman siblings’ eighth studio LP, and their first since 2017’s 24-7 Rock Star Shit, which was the cult band’s fourth successive Top 10 album in the UK. The new record has already produced three singles: sparky punk-pop number Running Into You; indie ballad I Don’t Know Who I Am (accompanied by a stylish black and white video which pays homage to northern new wave cinema); and last month’s Never Thought I’d Feel Again, which the band have suggested was directly influenced by their love of 1960s pop.
In a statement published across media outlets (including their local paper the Wakefield Express), the band said “We were talking about how a song like ‘The Locomotion’ is probably about as perfect a pop song as you can get – it’s so immediate and catchy, without any hang-ups or self consciousness. That’s what we were trying to do here – just be totally unabashed and heart on sleeve, no punk guilt, no baggage – just pure energy. Wakefield Motown, you might say.”
The West Yorkshire trio, who soundtracked a slew of noughties indie discos with hits like Men’s Needs, Hey Scenesters! and You’re Gonna Lose Us, have suggested that the last few years have been challenging for the band. A statement released on the group’s Twitter account in August said: “Towards the end of last year, we honestly could not even begin to imagine coming back and were seriously questioning our future as a band — it felt almost like a distant dream or something. So I can’t tell you how great it feels to be welcomed back…knowing that you have been waiting for us all this time — and that we can depend on you — has been a huge morale boost.”
The digital Cavern Club gig this month will give Cribs fans a taster of what to expect on their 2021 tour, with dates pencilled in for London, Birmingham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Manchester and Halifax next June. Early reaction to Night Network has already come in though, with the band’s straight-talking parents delivering their review of the new record via Rough Trade Transmissions.
