It has been announced that The 1975 will make their return to the stage this year at Japan’s Summer Sonic Festival. The event will mark the group’s first live appearance since their two-year hiatus from the road. The Indie quartet last took the stage on 3rd March 2020 for a performance in Dublin, the set was part of the band’s UK and European tour. The announcement of their live return was made via the band’s recently re-instated social media accounts.
The festival will take place across two dates and sites, Saturday 20th August 2022 and Sunday 21st August 2022 at Tokyo and Osaka. The 1975 are billed to perform at Tokyo’s ZOZO Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe on Saturday and Osaka’s Maishima Sonic Park on Sunday. The festival’s line-up also includes Post Malone, Carly Rae Jepsen, fellow British rockers Kasabian, Libertines and Primal Scream, Eurovision winners Maneskin and Megan Thee Stallion.
In a statement posted on the festival’s website, Naoki Shimizu gives the following positive message, “Summer Sonic is going to make a full and strong comeback, Festivals overseas like Coachella are coming up very soon and moving forward to reach this goal. We cannot win back the time we lost, but please give us a chance to make it up! Instead of being afraid and staying inside, why don’t we feel the connection to the world by experiencing our Summer Sonic! Let’s bring back the exciting days with full of live music festivals! We cannot fulfil our dreams without dreaming.” The festival took to social media to post each day’s lineup.
The “Popular” performers recently hinted at a new era for the group when their social media accounts and website were disabled, the accounts were then activated seemingly to support the release of their upcoming new album. The band’s follow up to their 2020 release Notes On A Conditional Form has been confirmed to be in the works, last month the group shared a video that showed the band in the studio. The Instagram post featured black and white footage featuring frontman Healy playing the guitar in a studio surrounded by recording equipment.
The band first rose to fame with the release of their self-titled debut album, The 1975 was released on 2nd September 2013 and sired great critical acclaim. The album reached the top of the UK album charts was certified platinum in 2014, the lead single “Sex” was premiered on Zane Lowe’s BBC Radio 1 show and was dubbed as the DJ’s Hottest Record in the World. The group’s following three albums also reached number one within the UK album charts, the band also experienced chart success with singles including “Chocolate” and “Robbers”. The band’s second studio album I Like It When You Sleep and the 2019 album A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships were both nominated for the converted Mercury Prize award.
