The South London MC took to The Other Stage tonight to perform what he described as his ‘most iconic’ set in his short career.
Playing a mixture of songs from his debut album Gang Signs and Prayer including singles ‘Big For Your Boots’, and ‘Blinded By Your Grace’ his breakthrough singles ‘Wicked Skengman Pt.4′ and his set closer ‘Shut Up’ were also featured in the grime artists performance.
Addressing the crowd at the start of his show, he told them “You don’t even understand, I was on the Sonic Stage last year playing to 300/400 people, and to come out today and see thousands and thousands of you… It means so much” He continued by saying “I do something called grime for those of you who don’t know, But this is Glastonbury, and this is the biggest crowd I’ve seen for a very long time”.
Stormzy also played his song ‘100 Bags’ in tribute to his Mother, who he described would be “confused by the sight of 20-30,000 people watching her son. I want to do this song for her.”
Taking time out of his energetic hour-long set, Stormzy paid tribute to the Grenfell Tower victims by performing his beginning rap verse in Simon Cowell’s charity single, a cover of Simon and Garfunkels ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. Before he began he took the time to make a statement to the attentive crowd, saying “In light of recent events, I’m just gonna say this, we urge the authorities to tell the fucking truth, first and foremost. We urge them to do something. We urge the fucking government to be held accountable for the fuckery, and we ain’t gonna stop until we get what we deserve.” His speech was then met with the drowning chant of “Oh Jeremy Corbyn” from the crowd, in favour of the Labour Party leader who appeared on the Pyramid Stage hours before. The rap artist also sported a Grenfell shirt underneath his Adidas tracksuit to pay homage to all those who suffered in the devastating fire.
Stormzy closed his set with crowd favourite ‘Shut Up’ and then left the stage to greet his beloved fans, shaking hands with the excitable people at the barrier and even gave his blue Adidas jacket to a young boy, who security then ensured he placed it safely away in a bag, away from anyone who may wish to take it.
