Rapper Stormzy is using his money well: Over a time frame of 10 years he will be donating £10 million to different “organisations, charities and movements that are committed to fighting racial inequality, justice reform and Black empowerment within the UK.” That’s half of his net worth, as the rapper is currently worth £20 million.
The announcement comes after various celebrities have been donating money to organisations and funds that are supporting the Black Lives Matter movement and protests, after the death of George Floyd had sparked international outrage.
Despite the 10-year plan, the “Own It” singer has said that it’s a “lifetime commitment” to support those causes financially and otherwise. The announcement was made via his own record label #Merky. “At #Merky we have always used our brand to elevate, support and amplify the issues and the voice of the black community”, the statement reads.
The announcement begins with general information from the record label, but also features a personal message from Stormzy:“The uncomfortable truth that our country continuously fails to recognise and admit is that Black people in the UK have been at a constant disadvantage in every aspect of life – simply due to the colour of our skin.”
Stormzy will be donating £10m to support causes which are commited to fighting racial inequality, justice reform and Black empowerment, over the next 10 years.

“I’m lucky enough to be in the position I’m in and I’ve heard people often dismiss the idea of racism existing in Britain by saying, ‘If the country’s so racist how have you become a success?!’ And I reject that with this: I am not the UK’s shining example of what supposedly happens when a Black person works hard. There are millions of us. We are not far and few”, the rapper continues his statement.
“We have to fight against the odds of a racist system stacked against us and designed for us to fail from before we are even born. Black people have been playing on an uneven field for far too long and this pledge is a continuation in the fight to finally try and even it.”
More detailed information about the pledge have yet to be announced, but #Merky and Stormzy are urging others to join in the pledge.
