Stormzy started to gain fam and traction back in 2014 on the underground music scene for his freestyling over grime beats. However, it was after the release of his freestyle ‘Shut Up’ on YouTube that helped gain his fame currently sitting on over 110 million views to date. He is also known for his political alignments with the labor party (Endorsing Jeremy Corbyn in 2016) and calling out the then Prime Minister Theresa May after the Grenfell disaster.
Last night’s award is far from the first award that Stormzy has won. Within his career so far he has been nominated for 62 awards and has won 31. As well as his awards he has a number of achievements to boast about, he was the first unsigned rapper to appear on Later… with Jools Holland. He is also noted for his collaborations with famed artists such as Ed Sheeran.
With his award in hand and a critically successful album release last year, Stormzy is showing a constant upward momentum, this is evident through his touring schedule. Dates are subject to change and or cancellation, but Stormzy is pressing on with his Heavy Is The Head with dates going on from now through to the new year. All this excitement will surely help the British artist continue and move forwards with more work and tours to come.
