As the year comes to an end and we are getting into the festive season a lot of people are dusting off their Christmas playlists. In today’s life, it’s easier than ever to consume music and content through streaming. Every year Spotify, the music streaming giant, releases the numbers of the most streamed music, this also shows the most listened to artist/band, album, and song as well as within specific countries and in the total worldwide.
“Drake, Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa and The Weeknd are among the most-streamed artists of 2020, according to figures from Spotify.”. The BBC reports on the release of Spotify’s figures that also show regional hits and most streams. In the UK the most-streamed artist is Drake who claimed the top spot pushing UK’s own Ed Sheeran down to the number 4 spot. The UK really liked The Weekend whose song Blinding Lights has taken the top spot for the most-streamed song.
For the longest time, we have been evolving the way that we as humans consume music. In recent times we have moved from cassette tapes to CD disks, and now we stream music on a streaming platform like Spotify, Tidal, and Apple music. Starting in 2011 Spotify has been one of the most popular music streaming platforms. Each year Spotify has released statistics on the most-streamed music (again be it a song, album, artists, or group) which you can look at here.
Every year we have been streaming music more and more. With more people around the world using platforms like Spotify the platform has seen a massive increase yearly in its streaming statistics. “There were 286 million monthly active users of Spotify according to the company’s Q1 2020 report. Of these, 130 million were Spotify Premium subscribers.”. If you look at the most-streamed music from Spotify you can look back to 2017 and this time in 2017 the most-streamed son was Post Malone’s rockstar with over 5 million streams, in comparison this year its DAKITI by Bad Bunny with over 7 million (3 million more than the second most-streamed song with is Ariana Grandes Positions)
The UK has seen a number of its own reach top spots, as already mentioned in the UK Ed Sheeran was the 4th most-streamed artists. Although she missed the mark to get a song in the UK top 5, Dua Lipa managed to get into the top 5 most streamed songs worldwide with Don’t Start Now! Dua Lipa has had quite a successful year with collaborations with the likes of DaBaby and Miley Cyrus, both songs made it into the top 10 in the UK.
Harry Styles also hit big this year with his album Fine Line being in both the UK and worldwide top 5 at number 2 and 4 respectfully. Lewis Capaldi’s Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent was in the number 1 spot in the UK. Keep on streaming all!
