Indie band Sports Team has decided to bring forward the release of their very studio album, ‘Deep Down Happy‘, to this Friday (June 5) via Island Records. The album was previously set to drop on June 19 after postponed from the initial date back in April, due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
The six-piece from Cambridge is an indie group on the rise. Since the release of two EPs—’Winter Nets‘ (2018) and ‘Keep Walking!‘ (2019)—they have gained incredible hype among the indie followers from their over-the-top and in-your-face tunes and are now ready to officially launch their first ever full-length.
Studying together at Homerton College, the newest college of Cambridge University, the six members formed the band in 2016. Their style can be described as guitar-heavy indie pop music with wacky and chaotic performance, alongside the lyrics that romanticise the mundane like a motorway (“M5“), fishing (“Fishing“), and Ashton Kutcher (“Kutcher“).
Since they emerged into the music scene, the now South London-based group has received so much love from the indie enthusiasts by selling out a show at the 2,300-capacity Forum in Kentish Town, London and scored a major record deal with Island Records. Most importantly, their first LP is coming out this week!
‘Deep Down Happy‘ is the title of Sports Team’s debut. “Here’s the Thing” leads the album’s roll out, which now gains almost a million streams on Spotify and half a million clicks on Youtube.
About the upcoming album, frontman Alex Rice opened up to Dork: “I don’t think we were conscious of doing it but the album maps the journey of moving in together in Harlesden, moving back to home towns to sleep on floors for 18 months, then coming back to London, weighing up whether being in a band with your mates, being young in London is still the best thing in the world. I think it probably is.”
