American singer-songwriter Snail Mail has announced the release of her new single “Madonna”. The artist took to her Instagram to share the exciting news with fans.
The new single dropped today under artist name Snail Mail, the Indie solo project by 22-year-old guitarist Lindsey Jordan. Jordan provided the following statement concerning her new release, “I am excited to share this one! In summation it’s about why love can’t exist between a person and a concept of a person. Remove the pedestal and you might realize there was never anything there at all.”
To accompany the new single, Jordan also paired the release with a new music video. Within the video, Jordan can be seen performing with a live band at the Armour-Stiner Octagon House located in New York.
The new single is the latest track to be taken from the singer’s upcoming album, Valentine, set to be released on 5th November 2021 via Matador. The album was produced by talented producer Brad Cook, known for his work with Bon Iver. “Madonna” marks the third single to be released from the singer’s forthcoming second studio album. The album’s title track “Valentine” was released on 15th September 2021 and the second single “Ben Franklin” dropped on 13th October 2021. Both singles’ have garnered critical and commercial success whilst propelling interest for the upcoming album.
Entertainment Weekly gave the following review for the album’s title track. “‘Valentine’ is as auspicious a first taste as we could hope for, gorgeously robust and sonically adventurous. [It] feels anything but small. It is bolder, catchier, and more expansive than its predecessor. From her sorrow and solitude, Jordan reemerges as one of indie rock’s most astute, confident, and compelling songwriters.”
The single’s press release gives the following description of Jordan’s new album: “Written in 2019-2020 the album is filled with romance, heartbreak, blood, sweat and tears. But Valentine is poised and self-possessed, channelling its anger and dejection into empowering revenge fantasies and rewriting the narrative of its own fate.”
Jordan has often been compared to a collection of celebrated artists from the 90s, the most prominent being Elliott Smith. Within the press release this influence is noted, “…with digitized electronic inflected anthems, swooning baroque FM rockers, smoldering slow-jam R&B and some of the most gorgeous and heart-rending finger-picked guitar ballads this side of Elliott Smith. The star of the show however is Lindsey’s voice – no longer the prodigal wunderkind, her vocals and words are rawer, deeper, snarlier and more feeling than ever before.”
Often accredited with the recent resurgence in 90’s rock, Snail Mail has taken the world by storm since her debut release. Her first studio album, Lush, was released on June 8th 2018 and was written at age 17. The artist’s individualist talent was soon spotted, and the singer’s star began to rise. Jordan began to gain recognition within respected musical institutions, in 2019 the singer was included within Billboard’s 21 under 21 list. The New York Times described Jordan as “an innovator, creating fresh expectations for what a complex artistic statement from a young voice can sound like today.”
In support of her upcoming new full-length release, the singer is set to embark on a worldwide tour. The tour will start with a collection of live performances across North America and will continue into the UK and Europe. Fans will be able to catch the UK leg of her tour next year, Jordan will kick off four UK performances In Manchester on 18Th February 2022.
