Discussing the album in The NME Slowthai said “Tea, biscuits, the roads: everything we associate with being British isn’t British, What’s so great about Britain? The fact we were an empire based off of raping and pillaging and killing, and taking other people’s culture and making it our own?”
Discussing the record in more depth in the press release Slowthai reveled “It’s basically my experience of growing up [in the UK]; of having a family that were immigrants originally, of the stories they’ve told me, of my childhood and how I’ve lived my life,” The rapper said. “Through it, I’ve gone on a journey of explaining how everything I was chasing to make me feel good only clouded my judgment. And it took me going through a ton of shit to realize that none of these things — no money, no drugs, no fake relationships — is gonna make me happy, or make me a good person.”
Slowthai also took today to release his new single, Gorgeous. A song inspired by a desire for people to find unity and connection in music. When releasing the record the Northampton based rapper said “Music to me is the biggest connector of people,” said Slowthai. It don’t matter what social circle you’re from, it bonds people across divides. And that’s why I do music: to bridge the gap and bring people together.”
Slowthai had an incredible 2018, he released his debut singles and gained massive critical acclaim and ended the year finishing fourth on The BBC’s sound of 2019 poll. He is hard to tie down as one genre, most obviously people recognise him as rapper, but he has also been compared to punk band Idels and supported rockers Slaves on tour.
When discussing his role in music himself he said “I just want to help people achieve what they really want, make them realise that they can achieve it and no one can tell them that they can’t, If they can see me for who I am then they can see that there’s nothing to be scared of by being yourself,” he says. “You can be any size, shape, colour and you can still be comfortable with who you are.”
Just a year ago, we introduced @slowthai as one of our British rappers to keep an eye on in 2018, and his trajectory has skyrocketed ever since. If you’re not familiar already, it’s never too late: https://t.co/uUMD4X8HUVpic.twitter.com/WbYDSrK9rY
