This all comes as part of a massive week for Slowthai as his debut album “Nothing Great About Britain” was released to warm and positive reviews. The NME scored the album 4 stars saying “The Northampton rapper’s unique debut album is authentic and honest in all its garish glory, an indication of the sprawling possible paths for his career to grow into.”
Pitchfork magazine were equally as positive saying “The Bajan-British rapper’s debut tackles the UK’s pressing crises—a looming Brexit, class hostility, widening poverty—with great jokes and writerly candor” & Ending with “slowthai’s role as a single character in this ensemble cast shows the integrity he brings to the task. Though he nods to the mannerisms of Dizzee Rascal and JME, Nothing Great About Britain avoids cross-generational pandering and bypasses territorial arguments over the borders of grime and UK rap. What binds the album is slowthai’s soul”
Slowthai’s debut album was originally due to be released the same week as Britain left the European Union. However as the politicans continued to delay Slowthai was forced to act and drop his album while hunger and appetite was still high. Slowthai is a regular contributor to political discussions and is regularly seen discussing culture and society. Away from Brexit he also made Channel 4 News for speaking out at the culture of toxic masculinity he feels young men are faced with and expected to perform to everyday.
“‘This is how men were, they don’t make them like this anymore’… it’s being drilled into you to be this way.”
24-year-old rapper @slowthai says men are “constantly” conditioned to “feel like they’ve got to live up to the stereotype” of masculinity. pic.twitter.com/QzHJ78AUYV
