Elusive London club figure Slim Papi steps into the light alongside Jam Baxter, one of the leading surrealist’s in UK rap today, with new single COSMO KRAMER. The pair have also released an accompanying video; subtly weaving in and out of reality, with abstract drawings and FX appearing throughout, this is the perfect accompaniment for the audio. The pair trade lyrics like a malnourished Big Pun and Fat Joe over a psychedelic instrumental powered by an electrifying prog guitar that conjures images of a Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper driving Harleys into the sun set on an mescaline fuelled audio joy ride a-la Easy Rider. You can check out the video below.
The pair have also had a pretty productive year working solo too. Slim Papi is working on a hot streak after releasing Châteauneuf-du-Papi earlier in the year to pretty solid critical acclaim, with single “Asparagus Tips” causing a few waves around the UK. His previous effort Excellent Adventure also caught people’s attention quite quickly. You can check out Châteauneuf-du-Papi on Bandcamp here. Unfortunately, all physical versions have in fact sold out. The Charisma Deluxe Bundle came in a particularly limited nature, with a “Very rare bottle of Natural 12.5% Slim Papi charisma extract produced with minimum intervention in the Campania region, Southern Italy”, as well a Slim Papi A7 art print, and Châteauneuf-Du-Pap artwork sticker. The 7” vinyl and art print bundles have also been bagged. You can still get a download copy of the album any time.
Jam Baxter, who is also a member of the acts Dead Players (alongside Dabbla and Ghost Town), and Contact Play (with Dirty Dike, Edward Scissortongue, Mr. Key, and Ronnie Bosh), has also been busy this year. Consistently offering us something pretty much every year since 2017, the rappers latest efforts, Fetch The Poison, continued his imaginative and almost gruesome lyrics to become one of the more interesting releases in UK rap. The album is Baxter’s first to be composed in complete sobriety, after its conception took place during a state wide alcohol ban in Mexico. “All the streets were eerily empty and it was amazing. I had the city to myself,” Baxter says. “Then suddenly there was a state-wide alcohol ban and I could no longer casually sip tequila as I went about my business. I didn’t really have a choice but to write”. You can listen to ”Blood Red Cheese Wire” taken from the album below.
