Welsh crooner, Sir Tom Jones has reclaimed his hit-making status with his number one album, ‘Surrounded By Time’. The singer took to Instagram to share a picture of himself showcasing his award as well as expressing his gratitude to have won.
For this release, Jones is not only celebrating gaining the number one spot, but the singer has also broken a record. The 80-year-old has become the oldest male to win the number one album on the Official Albums Chart. To make the victory even sweeter, Jones is also the oldest artist to win the award with new material. The previous holder of the record was the legendary folk singer, Bob Dylan with his release of ‘Rough And Rowdy Ways’, released on 19th June 2020. Alongside these accomplishments, the release also makes Jones the first Welsh solo artist to gain such traction within the UK charts, the last Welsh chart-topper was the 2012 album ‘Electra Heart’ by Marina & The Diamonds.
Jones had this to say to OfficalCharts.com about his victory whilst thanking those who helped him make the album.
“I am thrilled beyond words with the reception for Surrounded By Time, and to now hold these UK chart records is tremendous, just unbelievable. I am so proud of everyone who helped me create this music, I had a ball working with them and to get this result is just incredible. It’s wonderful that the public has allowed me to be musically expressive at my time of life and have shown their support. I am forever grateful.”
‘Surrounded By Time’ was released on 23rd April 2021 and featured four singles. The lead single, ‘Talking Reality Television Blues’ was released on 15th January 2021 and much like the other tracks, is a cover song. The release marks Jones’ fourth number one album, the famous baritone’s last number one album was ‘Reloaded’, released 16th September 1999. Much like his new release, ‘Reloaded’ also featured mostly cover songs. The album saw Jones team up with various artists including Robbie Williams and Stereophonics and sired five singles. One of the most successful singles was ‘Sex Bomb’, which saw Jones join forces with DJ and producer Mouse T, the single was released in 2000 and soon became a hit for both artists.
The previous good news which was confirmed earlier in the year stated that Jones will be performing some live events this summer. Jones also confirmed that he would be performing an exclusive concert 27th July 2021 in support of his number one album, ‘Surrounded By Time’.
