An announcement concerning the line-up for this year’s Glastonbury has been made, with Sir Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar having been confirmed to perform at the summer festival. The two artists will join Billie Eilish and Diana Ross as headlining acts for the iconic event. Ross and McCartney were both billed to play at the 2020 event, but due to COVID-19 related restrictions the festival was cancelled. The legendary performers are sure to return with a bang this year. This year will also mark a return to the traditional festival format, as Glastonbury has not been held in its full capacity since 2019. Glastonbury took to Twitter to announce the two new headlining acts, the post also included the first line up poster for this year’s event.

McCartney is set to perform at the famous Pyramid Stage on Saturday 25th June 2022, where the former Beatle last took the stage eighteen years ago. McCartney made his previous Glastonbury appearance in 2004, performing alongside Muse, Oasis and James Brown. By this June, McCartney will be 80 years old and will be the oldest act to perform, and 20-year-old Eilish will be the youngest act to perform at the festival. Glastonbury organiser, Emily Eavis has spoken on McCartney’s upcoming performance, “When he finally confirmed, we were beyond [excited], For us, having Paul McCartney is obviously a dream, a huge moment in our history. It means the world getting Paul McCartney to Glastonbury.”
Lamar is billed to headline the festival on Sunday 26th June 2022, and has also been confirmed to headline this year’s Rolling Loud Festival. The Miami event will also feature Kanye West and Future, other acts billed to perform include Three 6 Mafia, Saweetie and Soulja Boy. The Pulitzer Prize-winning artist recently made waves for his explosive performance at this year’s Super Bowl, also siring success at the 2022 Grammy Awards, receiving two nominations for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for his 2021 single “Family Ties“. The highly influential rapper has remained a regular at the esteemed ceremony, with Lamar having won thirteen Grammy awards during his career.
During the initial lineup announcement confirming the appearance of Eilish, more than eighty acts were verified to play the festival. Included within the line-up are Olivia Rodrigo, Lorde, Megan The Stallion, Noel Gallagher’s High-Flying Birds, Wolf Alice, Years and Years, Charli XCX, Crowded House, Celeste, Arlo Parks, Doja Cat, Haim, Pet Shop Boys, The Jesus And Mary Chain, TLC, Foals and Glass Animals. Many more bands and acts are set to be announced over the coming weeks, and an announcement confirming the full line up for the festival will be shared in May.
As well as being the youngest artist to take the Pyramid Stage, Eilish will also be the first female headlining act since 2016. The “Bad Guy” singer will perform on Friday 24th June 2022. The five-day event’s lineup showcases the festival’s dedication to gender equality, forty seven of the eighty-nine confirmed acts are all female-fronted. Ross is set to take the coveted Legends slot on Sunday 26th June 2022, the iconic singer confirmed her return to Worthy Farm in November last year. Ross took to Instagram to announce her triumphant return, the singer’s post also gave information concerning her UK Thank You tour.
Eavis spoke on the exciting news and stated that she was “thrilled” that Ross would be coming back to the iconic venue, “We were so excited to book such a legend for Glastonbury 2020 and are so happy that she’s the first to re-confirm for next year.” Michael and Emily Eavis, the father and daughter team in charge of the event have also disclosed that the festival will raise money for the Red Cross Ukraine appeal, alongside WaterAid, Oxfam and Greenpeace.
