Sheffield’s Leadmill Announces New 40th Anniversary Album

Legendary Sheffield music venue The Leadmill has announced a new album to commemorate its 40th anniversary, featuring Enter Shakiri, Good Cop Bad Cop and October Drift. Titled ‘Forty’, the album is a celebration of the historic venue which has hosted some of Britain’s biggest musical offerings over the years – including Oasis, Arctic Monkeys and Coldplay – but suffered gravely last year as a result of the coronavirus. According to Sam Feeley, a Leadmill promoter, the venue received no income for five months in 2020.

“We just had no idea how long this was going to go on for and how much support was going to be there,” Feeley said. “For a venue of our size we still had a lot of overheads to cover in that time.

“Once we got the funding in, everything was kind of looking OK again,” he added.

 The album package features a foreword by Sheffield rocker Richard Hawley, neon red vinyl to match the venue’s iconic sign, as well as artwork designed by local artist Pete McKee; the sleeve depicting a crowd of enthusiastic onlookers at a would-be Leadmill show.

“The Leadmill was pivotal to some of my most memorable nights out, looking at the small flyer with the upcoming bands and cherry-picking potential history-making gigs. Every city needs a Leadmill,” said McKee.

Last year the Leadmill was offered a lifeline after a guitar belonging to Alex Turner – frontman for the Arctic Monkeys – was prized in a crowdfunding campaign, with all proceeds going towards the preservation of the Leadmill as well as other grassroots venues during the difficult time. The guitar – a black Fender Stratocaster played on the main stage of Reading and Leeds Festival – raised over £100,000 in the charity raffle.
“We’re so humbled and so grateful,” general manager Rebecca Walker told the NME after the guitar’s sale. “We couldn’t thank the guys enough for listening to us and allowing us to reach out to them, but also just their generosity. To them, it’s just a guitar but to us it’s a lifeline – it’s a matter of whether a venue can stay open or not.”
