Royal Blood has spoken out about the rise in racism, following the latter-day protests sparked by the death of George Floyd. The duo took to Instagram, writing a note regarding social injustice, which people need to “educate” more, while admitting their white privilege.
“We have been described as ‘two guys making a lot of noise’ for nearly 6 years now, but the truth is we are two white males, adopting and basking in an entire genre of music that was created by black culture and black musicians,” the Brighton rock duo composed. They talked about how their music has been influenced by the genre of rock and roll originated by black musicians back in the late 1940s and the early 1950s.
They continued, “Our white privilege knows no bounds and has provided us every stepping stone of opportunity required along the way for a band like ours to get to the position we’re currently in.”
The duo then pleaded people to raise awareness of social injustice prevalent in today’s society. “We must all educate ourselves further on social injustice and donate where we can! We refuse to be silent on this matter and want to be a voice for change.” They also guarded against trolls who would tell them to “stick to the music” by referring to Clara Amfo’s quote: “You cannot enjoy the rhythm and ignore the blues.”
Royal Blood—comprising Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher—has not released any music since 2017’s ‘How Did We Get So Dark?‘ The album was their second full-length that was met with relatively positive reception and charted atop of UK Albums Chart, spawning singles like “Lights Out” and “I Only Lie When I Love You“.
Back in July 2019, the “Figure It Out” group talked with Kerrang! about their upcoming third studio album. They teased that the current vibe of the new LP was “weird and scary“.
“All things scary should feel weird at first. It’s like when you’ve got a new accessory or a piece of clothing that feels scary, you feel a little self-conscious going out in it. Then you catch your reflection and realise that you look cool as fuck. It’s one of those for us. If you’re not scared, then it means that you haven’t touched upon anything new or fresh. I think we were waiting for the fear.”
Unfortunately, head-banging rock fans may have to wait a little bit longer, as the band updated that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused them to delay the production of #RB3. Check out the post below.
