British-Japanese artist Rina Sawayama has confirmed on Twitter that she has begun to work on her second album with Clarence Charity, saying that “put next to SAWAYAMA its gonna cover all musical bases”. The singer has previously worked with singer and producer Clarence Charity, when in 2020 Sawayama covered Lady Gaga’s ‘Dance in the Dark’ and Clarence handled the production, to come up with a metal-influence electropop version of the original. He has also helped produce her debut EP ‘Rina’.

Rina Sawayama began her music career in 2013 with various singles released since such as ‘Who?’ and ‘Sleeping in Waking’. In 2017 she self-released her first EP ‘Rina’ and in 2019 she was the supporting act for Charli XCX on her across the UK. Her debut album ‘SAWAYAMA’ was out in 2020 after signing to Dirty Hit records in London, and it recently celebrated its anniversary. Sawayama wrote on Twitter: “ok #1YEAROFSAWAYAMA. this album literally changed my life. I remember being scared + insecure whilst writing this album, cos I felt like an outsider to the pop world. this feeling was exacerbated by countless meetings with labels who weren’t into it. but I knew that I had to do”
Sawayama has recently unexpectedly collaborated with Elton John for a track called ‘Chosen Family’, where she had this to say: “It was such a joy and honour to rework ‘Chosen Family’ with the legendary Elton John. The song means so much to both of us, and recording it together was such a special experience I will never forget. I got shivers when I heard his voice through the monitor and became emotional when he added the piano parts.”
Following the release of Sawayama’s debut album, she has massively grown in popularity and there is no doubt that her second album will be a hit, especially with her confirming that the album will manifest all musical bases. There has already been an overwhelming amount of fan responses to the singer’s Twitter thread, showing excitement for the collaboration: “clarence clarity is just irreplaceable. any other match probably wouldn’t create the same magic”
