A few months ago we covered the news (find that article here) that the remaining (or I should say surviving) members of the legendary hip-hop group N.W.A were set to reunite for the first time in over 27 years.
Within that article we discussed the possibility that N.W.A member Ice Cube was set to work on some “great visuals”, initially thought to be something not too dissimilar from when the hologram of Tupac Shakur joined Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre at Coachella a few years back; however this time it was thought to be deceased N.W.A member Eazy E to be ‘brought back’ for a performance. However unfortunately we saw nothing of the sort during the N.W.A set.
Even so, as mentioned, this is the first time in 27 years that Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella have all performed together on stage and that within itself is a remarkable feat.
Interestingly enough N.W.A did not perform any of their old hits that brought them success, such as ‘Straight Outta Compton’ and of course ‘Fuck tha Police’. Instead N.W.A performed some of Dr. Dre’s hits as well Tupac’s.
Ice Cube also brought out the incredibly current Kendrick Lamar for collaboration; see some of the performances below:
It has been a surprisingly significant past year for N.W.A; first with the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ film in 2015, which was a biopic on the formation and collapse of N.W.A as a group, then earlier on this year N.W.A were nominated and inaugurated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (see our article on it here) and they have finally topped off with a reunited performance at Coachella. It’s difficult to say what the future holds for NWA but either way this past year might have bought them a bit more mainstream traction than before.
