This coming Friday John Doran, founder of The Quietus website will once again be at the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire for a full night of tracks by legendary post punk group The Fall who were fronted by the late Mark E Smith who passed away a year ago. The event, named Rebellious Jukebox after one of the groups most famous songs, was first hosted last February at the venue which the group last played in 2013. The doors open for the event at 9pm and tickets for it can be purchased online for £5 plus a booking fee at the clubs official website www.thetradesclub.com and can also be picked up the box office, for which the number is 01422 845265 as well as Jumbo Records in Leeds or on the door at the venue itself. The first event last year was held in memory of Smith who died a month previously. Doran decided to host a night of tracks by The Fall as well as other recordings he had appeared on by bands such as D.o.s.e, Inspiral Carpets and Von Sudenfed. The strict MES-only rule stems from an incident which happened when Doran hosted a similar kind of event in 2007 to celebrate Smith’s 50th birthday. Doran said at the time: “I’d billed the night as songs by The Fall and other related music. During my first set of the evening I’d played The Fall solidly for about 75 minutes when I decided to play ‘Rowche Rumble’ by Sonic Youth from their Peel Session. Within seconds of me putting the track on a very angry looking man ran over to the DJ booth and threw his drink on the floor shouting, ‘If I’d known it was going to be some fucking student indie disco I wouldn’t have bothered coming. Fucking rubbish!’ And then he stormed out. So I have since learned the error of my ways. All MES all night long and nothing else!” The Fall were one of the most prominent bands of the post punk movement, formed in 1976 in Prestwitch, Greater Manchester. They were notable for their record breaking number of line up changes with Smith being the main and only original member to stay in the band throughout their 42 year career. Among the many members to have been in the band are notable ones such as brothers drummer Paul and bassist Steve Hanley, who wrote a book about his time with the band in 2014 titled “The Big Midweek: Life inside The Fall”. Others include Marc Riley, who went on to find fame as a disc jockey first as part of the double act Marc and Lard with Mark Radcliffe and later on 6music, as well as Smith’s former wife Brix Smith. Spawned from the 1970’s punk movement, their music went through numerous changes in style partially as a result of the numerous line-up changes. Despite this it was always characterised by its use of repetition and Smith’s misanthropic lyrics. They were the favourite band of the legendary DJ John Peel.
