The official UK album charts can confirm, Queen and Adam Lambert have topped the charts for the first time in 25 years with their new album, ‘Live Around the World.’
The iconic British band beat K-pop girl group, Blackpink to the number 1 spot after receiving the most album sales following their release. The challenge was met after the Korean girl band had a late surge of downloads for their debut album. This makes it Queen’s 10th number 1 album making them equal to the likes of Eminem, Rod Stewart, U2 and Michael Jackson.
Brian May, Queens guitarist tells officialcharts.com, ‘Thank you folks for making us Number 1 after all these years. So Queen and Adam Lambert’s very first release is Number 1…amazing. God bless you all.’
Lambert first sung with drummer original Queen band members Roger Taylor and guitarist May in 2009 after securing a place in the finals on the eighth season of American Idol. Their new album is the first without former lead singer, Freddie Mercury who died in 1991. The album features live performances from around the world of their chart hits such as ‘We Will Rock You’ ‘Don’t stop Me Now’ ‘Radio Gaga’ and ‘We Are the Champions.’ The album was released as a thank you to fans following the cancelation of their 2020 tour due to the virus pandemic.
May told BBC News “As we all grapple with the challenge of creating live shows in a world dominated by a formidable viral enemy, it seemed the perfect time for us to create a collection of hand-picked live highlights.”
The new singer, Lambert commented to officialcharts.com about the new album’s success, “I am beyond thrilled that we are Number 1!!!!!! As I always say, I am the luckiest person in the world to be able to work with Brian and Roger, and I’m so glad people are enjoying this album so much! The fact that we can celebrate the iconic music of Queen all these years later is incredible. We are hoping to be back on the road at venues across the globe again very soon!”
Drummer Roger Taylor commented on the album to officialcharts.com, ‘Number 1, my favourite number. It’s been 25 years since Queen have had a Number 1 album and it’s a thrill, still! Thanks to everybody who went out and bought it. I hope you love it and get a lot of kicks out of it.”
The album concludes with a live performance in Sydney where the band played their classic live set to raise money for the Australian bush fire crisis.
