Worn in the 1984 movie, Purple Rain, the legendary black and white motorcycle jacket will be for sale at auction alongside other memorabilia, including some items worn by Michael Jackson including his ‘Billie Gene’ jacket from the 1996 HIStory tour, and a Swarovski jewelled right hand glove worn in the 1992 Dangerous tour.
There will be items for sale from other artists such as Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, and Katy Perry. The auction will take place on 29 June in Profiles in History: an auction house which specialises in Hollywood memorabilia, located in Calabasas, California.
Initially fans were expected to fork out $8,000, but realistically the auction will expect the jacket to sell for a whopping $100,000.
In an interview, auctioneer and Profiles in History president Joe Maddalena, said:
“It’s definitely the most important piece of screen-worn Prince clothing that’s ever come up for auction.”
“This is the first time ever for something like this, and it might be the only time because the rest of the costumes may be in his personal wardrobe.”
The jacket was rumoured to have been gifted to a make-up artist and was received by Profiles in History before his death.
