Touring drummer for Canadian electronic dance act Caribou, Brad Weber has revealed plans for his other project, Pick A Piper, to release their debut album and tour Europe.
Although Pick A Piper were originally formed in 2008, it has taken five years for them to put together and release their debut album. In this time they have released two E.Ps, which have served their purpose to raise the anticipation ahead of the release of the self titled record. It is full to the brim of the different styles of dance music, with each track containing the potential to fill a dance floor to it’s maximum capacity. Featuring the vocal talents of Ryan McPhun (Ruby Suns) and Josh Schmersal (Enon/Brainiac), there’s enough variety in here to make a pick n mix bag jealous.
To give you a taster of what to expect from the album, Pick A Piper have released a slightly nuts video for All Her Colours. It all starts out simply enough, with a young lady strolling round her room, when a splash of black sludge appears on her arm. She looks up the symptoms in a book, and then it gets a little strange. She then releases her inner child by making a den, sitting inside it, concocting a potion of sorts, mixing it up, then gets warped into a fantasy, slightly comic-esque world, not too dissimilar to the works of Tim Burton. The rest of the video resembles the acid trip we all yearn for. If this doesn’t catch your attention, then I’m not entirely sure what will.
Pick A Piper is just what you would expect to hear upon finding out that the touring drummer for Caribou has made a record. You will not discover all it’s glories on it’s first listen. Nor the second, or the third. You could listen to this album a dozen times and still be discovering new bits of gold, with the X mark constantly shifting. A record that is perfect for the after party, it will probably keep you going right up till the next one.
Pick A Piper play the Shacklewell Arms in London on the 25th of November. To get an idea of what to expect, check out the video for All Her Colours below. Pick A Piper, the album, is released on November 4th.
