Pete & Bas, the iconic granddad rapper duo from South London have dropped new single ‘Speeding’ and an accompanying music video on GRM Daily. The vibrant video eloquently fuses an 80s theme, largely inspired by ‘Back to the Future’, with the aesthetics of rapper wear of the bright blue Adidas tracksuits that the duo is wearing.
Pete & Bas composes of two granddads in their 70s from different walks of life. Pete was a former leisure centre manager, then Royal Mail sorting office manager and Bas was a piano teacher. When asked how they got into rap, Pete explained that his granddaughter loves rap and that she would play it in the car: “At first I was turning it off and returning it all. But then I found myself listening to it more and more.” Bas added: “The more you listen to it, the more you get into it.”
In an interview with Modèle Magazine, when asked to describe what it’s like to be 70-something in the UK music scene, Pete responded: “You’ll have to ask Mick Jagger or Cliff Richard. Personally, I have no idea. All I know is when I, a twentysomething year old, look in the mirror every morning I see a 73-year-old looking back at me.” and Bas added: “Na it’s good you can’t put an age on talent, can you?”
Despite not fitting into the typical range of UK hip-hop artists, Pete & Bas have swept the scene with their tracks since 2018 as one of the freshest groups in the category. Some of the pair’s most popular songs include ‘The Old Estate’ which has 1.1 million views on YouTube and ‘Windowframe Cypher’ featuring The Snooker Team which has 1.7 million.
