French musician James Kent (AKA Perturbator) debuted a stunning, gritty and disturbing new video to accompany the song “God Says” featuring Hangman’s chair. The track comes from the artist’s latest album Lustful Sacraments which was released back in 2021.
The artist enlisted help once again from director Jean-Emmanuel Valnoir Simoulin having worked together for the album’s debut track “Death of the soul”. Simoulin said of the latest work; “Directing this video has been quite a ride. A six-month long ride, day and night, with 38,257 frames rendered and a lot of challenges, but definitely by far my most memorable experience in terms of video directing. I wanted to depict a journey in a monochrome, neo-gothic, over-identified Metropolis dipped in a wet and never-ending night, illuminated by thousands of flickering, bleak, neon-lights, highlighting vice and decadence. It is a collision between Fitz Lang, Orson Welles, “Blade Runner,” old Batman, Dick Tracy and even Roger Rabbit.”
The song itself is a powerful amalgamation of gothic post-punk and electronica, resulting in a moody, often dystopian sound that is laden with dread and despair. Fans of Trent Reznor or Mika Levi will appreciate the textured drones immensely. The video matches its dark intent to perfection.
The featured artist for this track is none other than the Parisian four-piece Hangman’s Chair, who provide the metallic influences on the record, having collaborated previously with Perturbator on their own track “Tired Eyes” from the album Banlieue Triste which was released in 2018. The artist described the relationship saying; “We immediately felt a comraderie, and the connection between us continued to grow in the years that followed. When he asked us to participate on ‘God Says,” it was an honor to return the favor.”
