Seen as one of English music’s older statesmen, Paul Weller has proven to the doubters that he still has it in him as his new album has claimed him the number 1 spot. This is the fifth album of his solo career that has gone to such a position and proves that he still has gas left in the tank.
His latest achievement has now made him only the third artist to have a number one album in five different decades. He now joins John Lennon and Paul McCartney in being able to boast of their achievements. Is this now the final hurdle Weller had to get over to have his name included with the likes of Lennon and McCartney? Personally, I think so as not only has he found success, but he has obviously been able to keep it up over a sustained period.

“Music is my obsession, it’s my education, it’s my entertainment, it’s the way that I communicate, it’s everything to me. Every track here reflects that obsession.” – PW pic.twitter.com/8p0jgPidui

Before he ventured out alone he found success with his band The Jam, who are recognised as one of the most influential bands of the 70s to early 80s. If you are reading this then I’m guessing you are well versed in the career of Paul Weller but if you don’t know The Jam, then you’ll know the following songs; ‘That’s Entertainment’, ‘A Town Called Malice’, ‘The Eton Rifles’ and ‘Going Underground’.
Across his career he has also been met with widespread critical acclaim with ‘Wild Wood’ and ‘Stanley Road’ both being included in separate Greatest Album lists. This is a trend which followed him through from his ‘Jam’ days as there were a few decent albums from them as well.
Weller has amassed himself a legion of very dedicated fans and there are more than enough reasons as to why. Whether it be his days part of The Jam, The Style Council or as a solo artist, he has enough of a back catalogue to last a lifetime. If you have not listened to anything from him yet, a Paul Weller deepdive into his catalogue is always a good time. Weller will now go down as a legend and deservedly so.
