Despite being one of the most revered people in the music industry, Paul McCartney has admitted to not being sure what he’s got in mind for his headlining set at Glastonbury this year. In a recent interview, the former-Beatles star said that “to tell you the truth we don’t know exactly what we’re going to do yet, but we are definitely planning on having a few tricks up our sleeve“.
Having been announced as one of the headliners earlier this month alongside renowned rap-artist Kendrick Lamar (more of which you can read about here), McCartney will perform on the Pyramid stage for the second time in his career, following on from his 2004 performance which was attended by as many as 120,000 fans.
And McCartney remembers it well, comparing the almost twenty-year old memory to a “medieval battle scene – it looks very heraldic, and to see this iconic scene and particular Glastonbury ‘look’ was very exciting.”
On the bright side, you can’t say the famed songwriter is unprepared. In the interview, he found a moment to talk about the survival kit he’d need if he was out camping for a music festival. “If I was camping – I would have to have a toothbrush and toothpaste, and we’d have to have a lighter for the fire, a guitar for singing around the campfire, a decent supply of food and water, and finally wellies“.

Of course, it’s a very different music scene that’ll be joining him this year. Billie Eilish will also be headlining, and some other big names on the bill include famed Beatles-fan Noel Gallagher, Sam Fender, Lorde and plenty of others. However, McCartney won’t be the only sixties icon present, with The Supremes vocalist Diana Ross also scheduled for an appearance.
It’s a big moment, and not just for Beatles fans. Glastonbury hasn’t been able to happen the last couple of years, what with cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. On the bright side, they’ve managed to salvage both McCartney and Lamar as acts previously planned for 2020.
Glastonbury this year will take place on June 22nd-26th. Sadly, tickets are a bit of a lost cause. They sold out after little more than 20 minutes last weekend, but it’s Glastonbury so go figure. If you want the chance to see McCartney live anyway, you can look at his website for the upcoming Got Back tour he has coming up, taking him over America from April till June.
