In a recent interview with Paper Magazine, 31-year-old Brendon Urie revealed that he currently identifies as Pansexual.
The multi-instrumentalist and Panic! At The Disco frontman emphasised that he was more than happy in his current relationship (he has been married to partner Sarah Urie for over 5 years) but would be open to exploring relationships with other genders if circumstances changed.
The interview comes just weeks after Urie released “Pray For The Wicked”, his second album in a row to hit the number one spot in the Billboard 100. In the statement, he explained the term pansexual as:
“If a person is great, then a person is great. I just like good people, if your heart’s in the right place. I’m definitely attracted to men. It’s just people that I am attracted to.”
Brendon has come under fire from the LGBTQIA+ community in the past, for identifying as ‘barsexual’ – a person who feels same gender attraction only when drunk. He has since come to regret the label and his association with it, saying: “I’ve said things without thinking about it, not trying to be offensive. I need to apologise for that.”
Sexuality was not the only topic touched on the interview, as Urie also discussed the #MeToo movement and its effects on the music industry, lamenting the fact that a lot of the time “guys don’t speak up.” He encouraged men who had witnessed improper behaviour to speak up, explaining that:
“Those guys [perpetrators of sexual assault and harassment] aren’t your friends, they’re not good people. They are doing terrible things, tell people about it. Don’t protect your friends.”
