Ozzy Osbourne has released the first single from his upcoming LP, yesterday the legendary singer shared the album’s title track “Patient Number 9”. The new track is being praised as the perfect single for Osbourne’s comeback and incorporates all the ingredients required for a flawless metal number. The song welcomes the listener with a calming melodic introduction, Osbourne’s trademark vocals soon kick in to cement the official return of the Prince of Darkness.
The track marks the singer’s first new solo release in two years, Osbourne’s last release Ordinary Man dropped in 2020 via Epic Records. The acclaimed album served to note the singer’s official return to the spotlight and was produced by Andrew Watt and Louis Bell, Watt also produced and co-wrote Osbourne’s new single. The American producer can also be heard on backing vocals, guitars and keyboards, joining Watt and the Black Sabbath frontman is a star-studded cast of talented musicians. The seven-minute masterpiece features Metallica’s Robert Trujillo on bass, legendary axeman Zakk Wylde on keys and guitars and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith on drums.
Completing Osbourne’s supergroup is respected guitarist Jeff Beck, the English musician’s signature playing is evident within his outstanding solo. Osbourne has given the following statement concerning Beck’s involvement, “The song is about a mental institution, Having someone like Jeff Beck play on my album is just incredible, a total honor. There’s no other guitar player that plays like him and his solo on ‘Patient Number 9′ is just jaw-dropping.”
An accompanying visually creative music video dropped alongside the single’s release, directed by Todd McFarlane the video utilises a mix of media to create strong imagery. The Grammy award-winning filmmaker utilises his roots as a comic book artist to create the single’s visual partner, the nightmare fuelled world created by McFarlane is a perfect pairing to Osbourne’s lyrical and musical themes.
The release of the new single comes months before its partnering album is due to drop, Patient Number 9 is set to be released on 9th September 2022 via Epic Records. The hotly anticipated album also includes a list of respected artists from the rock and metal genres, a host of bonified rockstars serve as featured artists on 10 tracks. Joining Osbourne on his new thematic offering are Eric Clapton, Guns ‘N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Pearl Jam’s lead guitarist Mike McCready and Jane’s Addiction’s Chris Chaney. Osbourne’s Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi has also contributed to the new album, the guitarist can heard on the tracks “No Escape” and “Degradation Rules”. A very special recording is included within Patient Number 9, a posthumous recording of the late Taylor Hawkins is featured on the LP.
Osbourne has spoken on his mental outlook regarding his upcoming album whilst reflecting on his recent past, “I was vaccinated and boosted and I still caught COVID in the end. My last album, Ordinary Man, was released just a few weeks before the pandemic started, and I was just about getting ready to go into the studio to work on this new one when the world shut down. It’s no secret that the last four years have been very difficult for me but making this album took my mind off of my problems.”
