On the 23. July. 2010 One Direction were formed on the X-Factor. In five years, they released five albums, went on four worldwide tours and won dozens of awards – until it stopped. After Zayn Malik left the band in 2015, Britain’s beloved boyband went on hiatus. All the members went solo and today, five years later, the fans are celebrating the 10th anniversary. A decade later, fans were hoping for some specials regarding the anniversary. And they broke the internet.
On Wednesday (July 22), the One Direction band account posted for the first time in four years on Instagram and for the first time in two years on Twitter (the last tweet was made to celebrate the 2018 anniversary). “Tomorrow! You and me got a whole lot of history #10YearsOf1D”, the post that set the internet on fire reads. It is referring to the One Direction song “History” which contains the lyrics “you and me got a whole lot of history.” The tweet gained more than one million likes in less than three hours, the Instagram post has hit the six million likes mark by now.
But that’s not all. After it got revealed that a special anniversary-website would be published, fans crashed the 10yearsof1d.com domain before the website officially dropped at midnight. It hasn’t been back up yet, due to the enormous amount of trafficking.

To celebrate the anniversary, various radio stations across the UK teased that they would play a lot of One Direction songs and would interview some of the band members. This resulted in the One Direction fans crashing three radio station websites.
At 8am, Roman Kemp played some old 1d tunes on the Capital FM special #1Dat10onCapital. “Apologies for being late to the news but we had to play One Direction”, Kemp said after the news got delayed due to him playing another One Direction hit. He chatted to Liam Payne via Zoom which caused the website of radio station number one to crash.
A couple of minutes before Payne ended his interview on Capital, an interview with his band colleague Niall Horan appeared on the Irish radio station FM104: Radio station number two crashed.
Then Spin Southwest was about to play One Direction songs, as well as old interviews with both, Liam Payne and Niall Horan. The result: The website of radio station number three got crashed.
Later on today, Sydney-based radio station KIIS1056 will play an old Harry Styles interview, so there’s a possible crash of radio station number four on its way. The fans are hoping for some more surprises from their favourite band, as we haven’t heard anything from Harry Styles or Louis Tomlinson yet. And it’s only 11am.
