Emerging in 2010, NOTHING self-released three E.Ps before signing to Relapse Records in 2013, releasing their debut full-length album Guilty Of Everything the next year. The group would then go on to release three more albums under the Relapse Records label in the subsequent years; 2016’s Tired Of Tomorrow, 2018’s Dance On The Blacktop, and recently, The Great Dismal, released in October of 2020. With their impressive output and signature sound defined by reverb-drenched guitars and soaring vocals, NOTHING have earned their place on the ever-expanding roster of post-2010 shoegaze groups.
As indicated by the title, The Great Dismal B-Sides will feature music from the previous album’s recording sessions, which took place at Pennsylvania’s Studio Four, helmed by acclaimed producer Will Yip. Amongst the album’s tracklist are three brand new songs, including a track that shares the album’s namesake, and “Amber Gambler”, which has been released as a B-side to the “La La Means I Love You” single.
Whilst it may seem quite out of left-field for a shoegaze group to cover a seminal R&B tune, vocalist Domenic Palermo talked at length about the song in a recent press release, reminiscing on his childhood, when he would drive around Philadelphia with his father: “We’d cruise around the neighbourhood with the windows down while he blasted Del, Stylistics, O Jay’s, Teddy P… lots of old soul and funk.” He also stated regarding the band’s decision to cover “La La Means I Love You”: “I always loved the strings and harmonies that were on these records… I find myself looking to integrate those kinds of soundscapes with guitars when I’m recording for NOTHING.”
The album is set to be released on the 8th of October and can be pre-saved using this link. Physical copies of the album are also available for pre-order via Relapse Records’ website.
