Ladies and gentlemen, Noel Gallagher wants to record a covers album. Yes, you heard that right, the man who constantly criticises songs actually wants to record an album with songs that aren’t his own. Speaking to the Daily Star’s Wired column, the former Oasis singer revealed that he’d like to cover songs from artists such as Burt Bacharach and The Smiths.
The 53-year-old talked about his new home studio which offers him the chance to record whenever he feels like it. “I’d like to do a covers album, now I’m going to have my own studio and I can be there all the time there’s no reason for me not to knock out an old cover between 6 and 7 in the evening”, Gallagher said. “I would do a good “This Guy’s In Love With You” by Burt Bacharach, “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” by The Smiths and a song by a band from Liverpool called Shack.”
Over the years, Noel Gallagher has been covering quite a few songs. From classics like The Beatles’ “Help” and “Helter Skelter” or David Bowie’s “Heroes” to Small Faces “Here Come The Nice”, Gallagher has got quite the range of cover songs.
It would definitely be a way for him to keep being active at doing music. In an episode of the “Funny How? with Matt Morgan” podcast, he recently revealed that “if I never wrote another fucking song in my entire life, I’d be happy with what I’ve done, I wouldn’t give a fuck.”
He explained that “from an artistic point of view, your best years are in the first few years. You do your best work when it’s fucking vital and you are in the same circumstances as your audience.” After some fans were fearing that this would mean the end of Noel’s musical career, it seems like doing a covers album might be the way to keep him active in the industry.
