After wowing audiences at Nottingham in May earlier this year, singer-songwriter and winner of the Asbury Music Awards in 2002 for Top Female Vocalist, Nicole Atkins will be returning for a UK tour after jetting around Europe this October.
Atkins began her career in and out of open-mic bars and coffeehouses around Brooklyn and Jersey whilst studying in high school, which eventually took her to North Carolina where she imagined immersing herself within the underground scene with the likes of Uncle Tupelo and Superchunk whilst studying illustration.
After returning to New York Atkins met keyboardist Dan Chen, from Moonraker, and the drummer Dan Mintzer, who were already aware of Atkins music from her Myspace page. Atkins, Chen and Mintzer grew within the underground scene in Brooklyn and Jersey collaborating with artists from her local haunt ‘The Sidewalk Café’ eventually becoming ‘Nicole Atkins and The Sea’ after recruiting a guitarist David Hollinghurst and bassist Derek Layes.
Eventually her debut album ‘Neptune City’ was released in October 2007 by Columbia Records which hit number 20 on Billboard’s Top Heatsekers chart. Thereafter in 2009 Miss Atkins was to release her second album ‘Mondo Amore’ with ‘The Black Sea’ after the previous band disbanded.
Soon Atkins was collaborating with several other artists for ‘Mondo Amore’, eventually releasing her latest album ‘Slow Phaser’ early this year.
Atkins played The Red Room in Nottingham in May earlier this year, apparently wowing the audience with her sultry tones. Now news has come out that Miss Atkins has released European wide tour dates, with the British leg starting at the Gullivers in Manchester on the 16th and takes her to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Bristol and finally to London on the 24th where she will complete her European tour.
Nicole Atkins covering Amy Winehouse Rehab here:
Nicole Atkins has been compared to Roy Orbison and singers from the famous Brill Building era as her music flows with a recurring 1950’s and 60’s blues feel, mixed with late-night pop. Perhaps comparable to the modern interpretation to the ‘Nancy Sinatra’ style of Lana Del Rey, Nicole Atkins has a sound which is unique to her own with a range of tastes and a racy voice which can captivate and swoon an audience with ease.
