A new rock super group is set to take stage this year. With the delightfully bizarre name ‘Giraffe Tongue Orchestra’ musicians William DuVall (front man for grunge group Alice in Chains), Brent Hinds (guitarist for metal group Mastodon), Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman, former The Mars Volta drummer Thomas Pridgen and Dethklok bassist Peter Griffin.
The band has been on the rumour mill for a few months now, especially with debates on who was set to take lead vocals, with singer and actress Juliette Lewis having been heavily rumoured to take the role.
Guitarist Weinman spoke on the radio on ‘Riffing with Christina‘ discussing the format and his excitement about the band:
“William DuVall from Alice In Chains is who has been singing with us. Most of the music was written before he got involved.
“But everybody is definitely in this band, it’s a real democracy. Which is a little different for me, it’s great, because Dillinger has obviously been my baby since the beginning. And while everyone contributes, it’s always been my vision. But with GTO it’s really a combination of all the elements, of all the pieces.”
He added: “It’s really interesting and great for me to collaborate like that. And I think when you hear it, it really does sound like all of us in one band, somehow.”
We can hope to see a full studio album from ‘Giraffe Tongue Orchestra’ (hopefully soon to be known as GTO!) later on this year, as they have been working since 2015 on a release; it’s just now that they finally have a lead singer.
