‘The Cher Show’ is set to make its European debut at Curve Theatre in Leicester in 2022. It is a musical about the life of pop legend, Cher, that first opened on Broadway in 2018 and closed the following year. It won two Tony Awards in that short time (Stephanie J. Block for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role and Bob Mackie for Best Costume Design of a Musical, who was Cher’s actual costumier). Now, it is being brought across the pond in an all-new production, produced by Tom de Keyser and Hamish Greer of Royo Entertainment with Strictly Come Dancing’s Arlene Phillips and Oti Mabuse as the director and choreographer, respectively, and Gabriella Slade as the costume designer. The show will also have lighting design by Ben Cracknell and sound design by Dan Samson.

According to Leicestershire Live, the musical will follow the life story of Cher from “her rise from a young child with big dreams to the dizzying heights of global stardom, and documents her relationships with her mother, singer Sonny Bono, and fashion designer and costumier Bob Mackie.” And it will do so with her hits as the soundtrack, featuring songs like “Turn Back Time”, “I Got You Babe”, “Strong Enough”, “The Shoop Shoop Song” and “Believe”. Fans should be thrilled with this production, as several of Cher’s biggest fans are working on the show themselves. Phillips said of getting to work on the project:
“I have been a fan of Cher since I first heard ‘I Got You Babe’ in the mid-60s and cannot wait to direct her musical. I love stories about strong inspirational legends like Cher and I am proud to be joined in the creative team by two women who have already made a huge impact in their careers. This exciting show will be a non-stop journey of Cher’s rollercoaster life, bringing to the audience Cher’s iconic songs, glorious dance numbers, unique costumes and her epic drama. All they need to do is come along and Believe.”
For Mabuse, a similar sentiment is expressed about getting to work on a show about such a living legend, saying, “My mum is a big Cher fan and I just remember us playing songs, like Strong Enough, and feeling so empowered as little girls and being in wonder of her outfits and her looks and the confidence that she had. To be asked to actually choreograph her musical, it’s such an honour…I’m going to try and make it as Cher as possible.”
The show will begin on 15 April 2022 and will continue until 1 April 2023. It will be making stops in the following cities: Sunderland, Hull, Sheffield, Manchester, Belfast, Blackpool, Nottingham, Canterbury, Plymouth, Dublin, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Southend, Cardiff, Stoke, Woking, Dartford, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Wolverhampton, Bradford, Brighton, York, Ipswich, Southampton, Northampton, Liverpool, Bristol, Wimbledon, Darlington, Torquay, Oxford, Llandudno, Norwich and Carlisle. Tickets for the opening show went on sale at midday today, and some of the other shows have tickets available now as well. You can get more information and make purchases here.
