London based indie giants ‘The Mystery Jets’ have released their latest cover album, ‘Home Protests’. The album debuted today (4th December), without any promotional material ahead of its release, making it a complete surprise to critics and fans alike.
In ‘Home Protests’ the group expand on the anti-establishment themes explored in their last album, ‘A Billion Heartbeats’ which was released last April. Covering famous protest songs from artists such as Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Willy Mason and Peter Gabriel. Throughout the album the group twist the rebellious classics and add elements of their beloved sound, all while keeping the authenticity of each track intact. The result is an album where each album flow into each other seamlessly, making for a complete listening experience.

The band took time to explain the backstory behind the album, which started when the group were forced to take time off from touring. “When we had to take some time out after Blaine’s operation at the end of last year, we got together each week to record a different cover of some of our favourite protest songs,” stated the group in a press release. “Songs about mental health, the environment, consumerism or racial intolerance, which still feel as real now as they did when they were written. Some happy, some sad.”
The four-piece also expressed gratitude to their fans, stating that they believed that the circumstances of the ongoing global pandemic made for the ideal time to share the album. “What with the lockdown, and not being the kind of people to like to miss out on a party, we decided that now would be a pretty nice time to share them with you guys.”
Following the release, the group are planning to return to the stage, scheduling a socially distanced liveshow that will take place at The Clapham Grand on the 19th December. The gig will be seated, and tickets are available here. The night promises to be one to remember, with the groups set to play old favourites, and tracks from their two 2020 releases.
