Ms. Lauryn Hill and The Fugees add more UK dates to the 2024 Tour
The 5x Grammy winner and iconic hip hop and R&B musician is once again reuniting with The Fugees to perform The Miseducation Anniversary Tour.
The tour begins on August 9th in Tampa, Florida, with 17 more US tour dates before it goes international. Following a show in Hoboken, New Jersey, Ms. Lauryn Hill is set to perform in Dublin, Ireland on October 7th before the tour makes its way to Cardiff, Manchester, and London prior to its European Leg. The Fugees will be co-headlining with YG Marley, the 22-year-old son of Lauryn Hill and grandson of Bob Marley.
In keeping with Lauryn Hill’s charitable behaviour, £2 from each ticket sold are being donated to MLH foundation to contribute to local and worldwide organisations supporting initiatives centred around mental health, women’s wellness, community and small business development, and education throughout the diaspora.
The tour is in timely recognition of the diamond-certified album which was named best album of all time by Apple Music in 2024.
This is not the first time the album has been singled out for its artistic and cultural significance. The album debuted at No. 1 in the Billboard 200 charts – the first time a woman rapper had an album in the top spot. In November of 1998, just three months after its release, the album went triple platinum. One of its more notable accolades, however, was that it was the first hip hop album to receive album of the year at the 1996 Grammy awards, and Lauryn Hill was the first woman to be nominated for 10 Grammy awards in one year, winning 5 Grammys in one night.
The album seemed to breathe new life into the genre of hip hop which had lost the second of its legendary rappers when the Notorious B.I.G was murdered on March 9th, 1997, following the murder of Tupac Shakur in 1996. The hip hop world seemed to experience an identity crisis, with many “othering” the genre on account of the violence that had occurred over the past year. Lauryn Hill’s album served to quell this unrest, as she became a mainstream figure of the genre that received international recognition for hip hop.
This album also expanded the parameters of hip hop music. Featuring both singing and rapping in its singles like Doo Wop (That Thing) and Everything is Everything, it seamlessly integrated both art forms which were previously at odds with one another despite both identifying as hip hop.
Given the history and cultural significance behind this album, it comes as no surprise that tour dates and additional tickets have been added to the UK leg.
