Vocalist Molly Anna does what we all should be doing: getting everything off our chest and out in the open. Alongside Molly Anna is producer and instrumentalist Mike Hukins; they are a duo of well-executed expressionists. The reality of life is opened up.
With their debut EP Ghosts to be released at the end of January, and as with all new EPs, the Molly Anna Band are building up a collection worthy of an album. Self-produced by Molly Anna and Mike Hukins, mastered by Myneataur productions, and featuring performances by musicians from the Leeds College of Music, Ghosts will gain profitable exposure. This Leeds-based duo are positive to work hard this year to continue their musically expressive journey.
‘we’re confident this will lead to greater opportunities!’
Via email the band told me:
‘In 2016 our main goal is to write lots more new material and tour the UK. The response to our EP has been great so far and we’re confident that this will lead to greater opportunities!’
In the video to their first single Villain (released last October to raise funds and awareness for the Samaritans), its dark, desolate imagery metaphorically sums up our own lives. It demonstrates what can be a painful cycle of existence. A sort of taking your head out of the sand moment; moving from denial towards healing. Music of discharge is wonderfully expressive and Molly Anna Band does this effectively.
Reminiscent of Yeah Yeah Yeahs Molly Anna’s striking vocals echo in your mind and the poetic, rhythmical lyrics complement this. It’s not to be labelled as depressing, it is more to do with healing; it simply makes listeners think and reflect. A quality all good poetry leaves readers with.
Covering Nirvana’s Heart-Shaped Box, we hear a poetic rhythm which summarises Molly Anna Band. Upon a second listen read Nirvana’s lyrics alongside and admire Kurt Cobain’s lyrical genius which certainly influences Molly Anna and the band’s own lyrics.
Launching in Sheffield’s Bloo 88 on January 30th, Ghosts EP will influence listeners to express, reflect on, and to release that build-up of inner emotion.
