This year’s famous Glastonbury festival appears to be more controversial as heavy-metal stars ‘Metallica’ have been picked to headline.
This week the Glasgow Post-Rock band ‘Mogwai’ have been in the spotlight after claiming that they understand why Metallica would be booked for such an event but also sympathise with those who find it controversial.
Afterwards Mogwai told NME magazine that they believed Metallica were ‘unbelievably bad’ criticizing Lars Ulrich, Metallica’s long term drummer, and saying that the controversy has spurred due to the band being “shite”.
Metallica has also landed itself into more controversy with Animal Rights activists due to the front man James Hetfield’s support of Bear Hunting, releasing a new tv show about hunting bears in Alaska, never mind being a member of the National Rifle Association. An online petition has surfaced to try and ban the band from playing at Worthy Farm on the 28th of June on the Pyramid Stage.
However deep these controversies may be, and however one may disregard Hetfield’s personal opinions and associations, it seems a little sad to see a band be singled out for controversy when the idea of Glastonbury is of musical unification.
Finally the long awaited times have finally be announced for the festivals performances with stages, dates and set times of the bands. Best get a pen and paper handy as this looks like one wild weekend. Metallica or not, Glastonbury is the festival to be at this summer.
