One to watch for 2019, singer/song-writer and YouTube influencer, Megan Davies is bringing her unique alt-pop style to the UK this February and March, which will see her blending together a mix of commercial pop, indie folk and experimental rock. This comes after she released a special acoustic video of her single ‘Gimme’.
The original version, of ‘Gimme’, debuted on nine Spotify playlists across the globe, upon its release, in November 2018, and was hotly tipped by the likes of Billboard. The release comes ahead of Davies’ UK and European headline tour, in February and March. The star kick starts her five-date UK leg of the tour, in Manchester, on the 24th of February 2019, culminating in London, on the 1st of March 2019, before continuing the European leg of her tour.
Speaking, to Billboard, about the deep message in the track, Davies said: “The whole time we were working on it, I had this Black Mirror episode, ‘Nosedive,’ in my head. It creeped me out because I saw so much of myself in it. We live in a world where self-worth is dictated by what we see and do online. It’s supposed to connect us, but even as my numbers have grown higher I’ve found myself feeling even more detached.”
Megan first gained traction online, which led to her becoming a YouTube sensation, after building up views and subscribers in their millions with her creative acoustic covers and mashups. Tracks like her 3-song mashup ‘See You Again/ Love Me Like You Do/ Sugar’ has had over 60 million video plays and reached #1 on both the US and Global Spotify Viral 50 charts.
She’s now amassed over 190 million views and 1.3 million subscribers on her YouTube channel and she maintains over 6 million Spotify streams each month. Her influencer status has led to collaborations with the likes of the Red Cross & American Cancer Society as well as performing for Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendeya and the creators of ‘The Greatest Showman’, then attending the film’s premiere, in New York.
Megan’s first debuted original music in 2017, with her debut EP ‘Bad Poetry’, which was released independently and has garnered her over 3 million Spotify streams, with the title track, ‘Black and White’, being widely accepted and getting a lot of love from Sirius XM. Speaking about her EP ‘Bad poetry’, Davies said: “I had built up this amazing audience on YouTube playing covers and mashups, and as it grew bigger, I became more self conscious of my own writing; I was nervous to post my own material.
She continued, “‘Bad Poetry’ is the name of a song on the project, and it represents this realization that I came to last year[2016]: like “who cares if all this is ‘Bad Poetry’?” For me, it takes the power away from the label. As long as I’m following my artistic instincts, that’s enough for me.”
In 2018 she went on to release the songs ‘Doesn’t Matter’, which won 1st Place in the USA Songwriting Competition – Pop Category, the popular streaming track ‘Moonlight’, and her latest single ‘Gimme’ giving a taste of what’s to come. She also finished off last year with a beautiful festive number ‘Blue Christmas’.
As well as her ever-growing online following, Megan is also garnering a name for herself on the live scene, having recently toured across the US supporting YouTubers like Boyce Avenue and has shared a stage with the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Madilyn Bailey and Noah Guthrie and Striking Matches.
